This Monday, December 8, 2025, marks the fifth anniversary of the departure of Alejandro Sabella, a footballer who left his grain of sand behind and brought his knowledge and experience wherever he was. The anniversary is overshadowed by a special date: from 5 p.m. Estudiantes visits Gimnasia to secure a place in the final of the Clausura tournament, where the winner will face Racing, which has just beaten Boca.
The former Estudiantes player and coach died on December 8, 2020 at the age of 66 and his legacy is still present in Argentine football and especially in the national team, where he was on the verge of becoming world champion.
One of Sabella’s last public appearances in that fateful year of 2020 was his return to the AFA compound in Ezeiza. At that time, the former coach was invited by President Claudio Tapia and they both visited the stadium where he last set foot after the final defeat against Germany: the Maracana Stadium.
THE STUDENTS’ MEMORY
“With your teaching as a premise, with your legacy as a flag. We miss you every day, Professor. Lead us from your seat!” Estudiantes wrote in their official reports with two pictures of Pachorra.
