Students from a public school in Santa Catarina staged a battle to surprise principal Glenda Rosa Zanchet with a Principal’s Day honor, impressing her and going viral on social media.
Year 9 students at a public school in Fraiburgo, west of Santa Catarina, played a “prank” on the school’s principal, 48-year-old Glenda Rosa Zanchet. They simulated a fight to attract the attention of professionals, and afterward, they celebrated Director’s Day.
The video showing the performance and honor went viral on social media. The pictures show two students “fighting” in the school yard, with the principal running to break up the confusion. Then the students start laughing and chanting “Congratulations” and presenting her with a bouquet of flowers. Glenda is happy with the surprise.
Director’s Day is celebrated on November 12 in most states of Brazil. to landGlenda said the game was played a day later, because the students were on a graduation trip. When she saw the supposed fight, it was a shock.
“I was attending another class and this kind of friction is not a common thing in our school. From the scene, I really thought it was real and I went to break up the fight. I wasn’t afraid, I didn’t even think, I just went with the intention of breaking it up so they wouldn’t get hurt, because fighting is not what we teach in school. Then I saw the surprise,” he recalls.
According to Glenda, the idea came from students who had help from two teachers. The director says it was a very emotional moment. “The surprise was so great, the affection they have for us. I have so much affection for them, and for all the students in the school. After it subsides, because it’s a big fear, it’s a very good feeling, a happy feeling, an accomplishment to see that you’re loved by them.”
The professional says that she did not imagine that they would pay tribute because the date had already passed. On the 12th day, she received gifts from other classes at school, such as flowers, cards and chocolates, as well as a fifth-year “troll” similar to the ninth year. She also commented that she was very surprised by the fallout on social media. “I even joked that we were all becoming famous.”
“It’s easier when you teach with love.”
Glenda has been a teacher for 27 years and, since 2020, has been in charge of the state school. At first, she said it was difficult, but she sees these medals as recognition for her work and shows that she is on the “right path” in school.
“I managed during the Covid-19 pandemic, until 2020,” she says. “It was a very big challenge, because there was the whole disease issue, and online classes. Today, I have more experience, but we make mistakes, like everyone else, but we also get things right. When you receive this kind of honor, you are remembered for your day, and you see that you are going in the right direction.”
The principal also highlights the importance of having a good relationship with students: “At the same time that I can ask them for teaching, knowledge, learning and responsibility, I can also be a friend and a listener. Sometimes, students come and secretly say that they do not have the courage to tell their father or mother, and we give them advice. It is a very good relationship and we need that in schools. I think this is very important today in education, but, of course, without leaving aside the role of teacher and principal.”
“It’s easier when you teach with affection, love and affection. It’s more fun to learn that way. That’s one of the goals of our school, to be more welcoming in teaching,” Glenda adds.
