Freshly inaugurated as Secretary of Public Security of São Paulo, Osvaldo Nico has aroused the concern of the communications team of Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans).
Unlike his predecessor, MP Guilherme Derrite (PP), Nico has always been accessible to the press and since 1980, when he joined the Civil Police as an investigator, he has maintained friendships with journalists.
“We, the police, do a lot of work that is not publicized. If I know that a radio station has two listeners, I will go there and speak well of the police,” says Nico. “I am operational, I like the police and the press, who can always help us.”
During his first month at the head of the SSP (Secretariat of Public Security), the secretary has already scheduled coffees in his office with journalists and granted interviews without the knowledge of his advisers, notably to address specific incidents, such as the femicide of Tainara Souza Santos.
Nico says he even organized a live interview with presenter José Luiz Datena, on RedeTV!. However, the government’s communications team intervened to convince the Secretary of State not to go on air without first completing the “media training” course.
Nico claimed he was a long-time friend of Datena’s, but he accepted the team’s suggestion and decided to take the course in early January.
