Councilor Rubinho Nunes (União) withdrew his candidacy for president of São Paulo city hall. The decision was taken by União Brasil, during a meeting held this Friday (12/12).
The party also decided to withdraw from the process of expulsion of the current Speaker of the House, Ricardo Teixeira, who is expected to be returned to the command of the Municipal Parliament in the elections that will take place next Monday (15/12).
“Considering the request of President Ricardo Teixeira, of União Brasil, to support his re-election and also the request of Mayor Ricardo Nunes for the pacification and unity of the Chamber, the group of advisors decided, unanimously, to close the question of the reappointment of Teixeira,” the party indicated, in a note.
Teixeira’s candidacy, supported by Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) and ten other parties, caused a split between União Brasil, led in São Paulo by former mayor Milton Leite, and Nunes’ allied base.
Indeed, an internal agreement at the Union provided for a rotation between its advisors in charge of the Chamber.
The party also claims a deal reportedly struck with Nunes and other parties that supported him in his mayoral re-election campaign last year. Under the terms of the agreement, Union would serve as president of the city council for a four-year term.
Pacification
According to members of the Union, the withdrawal of the party by withdrawing the candidacy of Rubinho Nunes and supporting the name of Teixeira was done to pacify the relationship with the mayor and for the harmony of the Chamber.
As a result, the trend is for Teixeira to be the only candidate.
Psol, which traditionally launches its candidacy in a symbolic manner, is not expected to name a name for this year’s conflict. The party should not vote for Teixeira, however. Still in opposition, the PT has already announced its support on behalf of the current president. Consequently, the party must retain the seat of the 2nd Secretariat on the Board of Directors of the Chamber.
