Madrid, December 12 (EFE). – The President of the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), Eva Alcón, has stated that she “understands” the complaints of the Madrid Rectorate because “financing for universities is an open question”, pointing out that their creation as an association and corporation is “a necessary step”.
The six members of the Conference of Rectors of Public Universities of Madrid (Cruma) have signed their statutes as an association, led from January by the Rector of the Autonomous University, Amaya Mendikoetxea, and have stressed the need for more “basic funding”.
In an interview with EFE, the President of CRUE and Rector of the University Jaume I emphasized that the Madrid Rectors “have the full support of CRUE to demand this funding, so necessary for the Madrid university system.”
He recalls that it is the Autonomous Communities that must guarantee these resources and believes that there is room for improvement according to the new draft law on universities in the Community of Madrid – which the rectors of Madrid still consider inadequate.
“I know that the rectors of the Madrid universities are negotiating with the Community of Madrid on some changes so that they can be incorporated into the law,” he noted, after expressing his respect for these negotiations and proposals.
Given the step taken by Cruma to join a legal system that would guarantee the invocation of Madrid law, Alcón explained that “this was a necessary step since each of the autonomous communities has its own ‘mini’ Rectors’ Conference.”
“I am sure that Cruma will continue to work as before. It is true that there are new challenges and new initiatives that I believe must seek the opinion of the rectors,” she affirmed, recalling that “protecting the interests of universities means protecting the interests of the society we serve. We do not take care of our own interests at any time.” EFE
