The White House had informed President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva that it would lift sanctions against the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, and his wife, lawyer Viviane Barci de Moraes. The two men are no longer on the US government’s list of targets under the so-called Magnitsky Act.

As the blog reported, after the conversation between Lula and Donald Trump last week, both Jair Bolsonaro’s allies and the president’s aides at the Planalto Palace were warned that they could expect a new measure of détente between Washington and Brasilia.
Magnitsky Global, created during the Barack Obama administration (2009-2017) to punish foreign authorities who violate human rights, imposes behind-the-scenes restrictions on the United States that have been compared to a “financial death sentence.” The restrictions include banning U.S. companies from carrying out transactions or negotiations with those sanctioned – which could harm the minister’s access to credit cards, banks and even airlines.

Moraes was officially included in the List of US government sanctions on July 30. The announcement of the minister’s exclusion comes a day before his birthday – Moraes will turn 57 this Saturday.
Viviane was the target of the sanction on September 22, after the first panel of the Supreme Court sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison for armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d’état, qualified damage due to violence and serious threat to Union property, and deterioration of classified property.
Rapporteur of the main investigations that ended the siege against Bolsonaro and his allies, Moraes was the target of the sanction after the former president’s allies, led by federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), sought members of the Trump administration to convince them that a series of decisions of the magistrate affected American citizens in the United States, as in the case of the suspension of profiles on social networks and the temporary withdrawal of X, a platform based in the country and controlled by Elon Musk.

At the time of the sanction, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent even declared that Moraes was “assuming the role of judge and jury in an illegal witch hunt against American and Brazilian citizens and companies”.
“Moraes is responsible for an oppressive campaign of censorship, arbitrary detentions that violate human rights, and politicized prosecutions – including against former President Jair Bolsonaro. Today’s action makes clear that Treasury will continue to hold accountable those who threaten American interests and the freedoms of our citizens,” Bessent said at the time.
