The Vox councilor and head of the Family and Children sector of the Castelló City Council, Alberto Vidal, sparked controversy after declaring in an interview with Hoy por Hoy Castelló, on Cadena Ser, that a woman “if she is going to abort, it is because she decides not to have the child, and she could have decided before having the orgasm that the child provokes in her”. These statements took place within the framework of a debate on abortion and coincide with the call for anti-abortion mobilization promoted by its town hall in collaboration with the Provida Castellón association.
During the radio interview, Vidal claimed that women “are often pressured by their boyfriend – who is irresponsible – to have an abortion” and said that this pressure occurs through blackmail such as “not having children because otherwise I will leave you”, an argument he called “sexist”. In this context, the councilor defended that his position seeks to guarantee women’s freedom of decision, considering that currently many do not decide in conditions of total freedom.
As explained, Vox understands that in many cases, abortion is conditioned by economic and social factors. The advisor emphasized that women abort “because they do not have economic resources” or “because they experience economic and social pressure”, and said that his goal is “that they do not feel this pressure” so that, if they decide not to continue their pregnancy, they do so “truly freely”. According to him, “at present, the majority does not move freely, they are pushed by social and economic pressure”.
These statements come a few days before the mobilization called by the Department of Family and Children and Provida Castellón under the motto “Castellón is committed to life”, which will take place next Saturday, December 27 in Pescadería Square. Vidal spoke about this call in the same radio space, where he once again highlighted his approach to women’s freedom and abortion.
