Last night, in a session marked by confusion, interruptions and clashes between lawmakers, Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies voted on a bill that could reduce former President Jair Bolsonaro’s coup sentence from 27 years to just over two years.
The 70-year-old former president was convicted of attempting a coup against Lula da Silva after the 2022 election defeat, but his lawyers demanded his release from prison to undergo two urgent surgeries.
The legislative initiative presented yesterday reduces penalties for several crimes, including coup d’état, and also provides for the release of more than a hundred Bolsonaro supporters imprisoned during the riots of January 8, 2023. While the right celebrated her treatment, the ruling party denounced it as a “tailor-made” arrangement after an attempt to sanction an amnesty failed. Deputy Glauber Braga was forcibly evicted from his room after accusing him of a “coup offensive.” Official broadcasts were interrupted and journalists were removed from the premises.
