THE yogurts are a fundamental food in the diet of many people. Coming from milk fermentation, their creamy texture, mild flavor and versatility make them attractive at different times of the day: from breakfast to snack or … even for dessert.
From a nutritional point of view, yogurts constitute an important source of high quality proteins, vitamins of groups A and B and minerals like calcium, phosphorus or magnesium. The lactic ferments they contain promote digestive health, contributing to the balance of the intestinal flora.
When consuming yogurt it is important to take into account the period during which we can take it without losing its properties or becoming harmful to our health. This date appears on the product label, but it is not the date stated ‘expiration date’but from ‘expiration date’.
And yogurts haven’t had an expiration date for years. This is how the popular chef explained it on his social networks. Jordi Cruzknown for his role as a juror in “Master Chef” and owner of the three-star Michelin restaurant ABaC.
Jordi Cruz explains until when yogurt can be consumed
“Did you know that yogurts are one of the few supermarket products They have no expiration date», asks Jordi Cruz in a video published a few days ago on his social networks. The chef emphasizes that, since 2014, this dairy “has an expiration date”. This means that “A few days may pass and you can consume it with complete peace of mind.“.
“I give you information so that you are calmer,” explains Jordi Cruz. First of all, the chef says that the yogurt benefits from “around 28 days of preferential consumption”. “From there you have two more weeks to consume it without problem“, he emphasizes.
But what happens if those two weeks pass? In this case, explains the chef, you have to open the yogurt and check if it is in good condition. “If you see that he has good color and aroma, no mold, edible“, he emphasizes.
And the fact is that after the expiration date, yogurt may have “less flavor”even “a little acidity”, but it can be consumed, underlines the ‘MasterChef’ jury.
In fact, according to the Spanish Agency for Food and Nutritional Safety (Aesan), the preferential consumption date indicates the moment until which the food maintains the expected quality. From that point on, “it may begin to lose its flavor and texture,” but “it remains safe, as long as storage instructions are followed and its packaging is not damaged.”
However, Jordi Cruz emphasizes: “When you see that it has big flaws, throw it away”. On the other hand, if this does not happen and the yogurt is in good condition, the cook recommends “enjoying” it and eating it “because it is an incredible product”.
These instructions, explains the chef, apply to both yogurts normallike the skimmed or at the Greeks. “From there, the rest is something else, but they are total security,” he concludes.
