The truck involved in the fatal accident in Los Hornos / web
The drama has no brakes in the region. We are talking about deaths from traffic accidents, the number of which has already risen to 78 in 2025. A number that is as frightening as it is worrying. For this reason, there is a call for preventive measures, education or awareness campaigns and more controls, since the existing ones are not producing results to reverse this tragic trend.
It is known that La Plata, Berisso and Ensenada are facing a problem that experts call a “public health problem”.
“Today the risk on roads is high and motorcycles remain the vehicle with the highest involvement in accidents, both fatal and non-fatal,” warned the NGO Corazones Azules, chaired by Pedro Perrotta.
Exactly a vehicle with these characteristics was involved in the last fatal accident. The incident happened in Los Hornos, on 155th Street between 67 and 68. It was last Sunday.
A Ford Ranger truck was also involved in the accident. The causes are being investigated.
According to police information, the deceased’s name was Daniel Hugo Borgert (49), who came from the city.
Although they managed to transfer him to Melchor Romero Hospital, the doctors who attended him were unable to prevent his death.
UFI No. 14, led by María Scarpino, intervenes in the case that has already required various evidentiary measures, such as interviewing surveillance cameras and witnesses.
The summary will be examined at the third police station, which will cooperate in all procedures required by justice.
A recent report by the NGO Corazones Azules on motorcycle use in La Plata found “a high level of serious violations among observed riders.”
It was also reported that “failure to use a helmet is the most common violation, with the highest incidence in the metropolitan area, at night and on weekends.”
In this context, the NGO warned that “42 percent of motorcyclists do not respect traffic lights, rising to 54 percent on weekends. In addition, non-compliance with the prescribed traffic lights is a significant problem, especially outside urban areas. Transporting more people than permitted also poses a significant risk.”
With almost 70,000 motorcycles on the road, more than 700,000 inhabitants and a total vehicle fleet equivalent to one two-wheeler for every 2.43 inhabitants, the continued increase in the use of this type of transport year after year is having a worrying impact on urban accidents.
“Faced with a phenomenon that already accounts for 60 percent of road deaths, measures to improve road safety must be implemented. The measures to be taken must aim to reduce accidents through specific infrastructure, smart controls, mandatory training and awareness campaigns,” they recommended.
They also proposed providing priority lanes for motorcycles, stop boxes at traffic lights, speed reductions in the city, cameras that detect violations in real time and a record of repeat violations for motorists.
“Aside from everything that has been said, we need to promote reform of the licensing system, strengthen compulsory training and promote the use of approved helmets, high-visibility vests and other protective equipment,” Perrotta said.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death, disability and illness worldwide, with major social and health impacts.
“We are talking about a phenomenon that causes avoidable deaths, overloads hospital services and has profound psychological and economic consequences. It is both a health and a social problem,” the company stressed.
“Road insecurity should be viewed not just as a traffic or safety issue, but as a public health issue,” they concluded.
The number of road deaths in 2025 will be the highest in five years
