
A “serious and significant incident” is being developed at the UK’s Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest in Europe. Armed police, fire and rescue services intervene and injuries occur. A man was arrested and police are not reporting what happened, but the smell of pepper spray lingers in the area. Security forces have so far assumed that “this was not a terrorist incident”
The airport reported that “crews and police were in the Terminal 3 parking garage.” There’s gas in the air and ambulances.
There are people who receive medical assistance at the airport. However, his injuries are not believed to be serious.
Commander Peter Stevens said: “At this stage we believe the incident involved a group of people who knew each other and that the argument escalated and resulted in a high number of injuries.”
“We do not consider this incident to be terrorist,” he clarified. “I understand people’s concerns at this time and we would like to thank them for their cooperation,” said Commander Stevens.
London Ambulance Service declared a “significant incident” at around 8.40am.
“A full deployment of resources has been deployed and emergency services are treating the case as if it were ongoing,” they said.
A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “We were called at 8.14am today to assist our emergency service colleagues with an incident near Terminal 3 at Heathrow Airport. Firefighters remain at the scene.”
Heathrow advises passengers to allow extra time when arriving at the airport and to contact their airline if they have any questions.
There was disruption to train and tube services, with some delays on the Elizabeth and Piccadilly lines.
National Rail reported on its website that routes had reopened and trains had been allowed to stop at Heathrow “after emergency services responded following an incident at the airport”.
Although lines have now reopened, disruption is expected to continue as traffic returns to normal. Delays of up to 10 minutes and cancellations until 11:45 a.m. are to be expected.
