Former Minister of Transport José Luis Ábalos will spend Christmas in Soto del Real prison where he has already been incarcerated for almost a month. The former socialist leader is under investigation for his link to alleged irregularities in public procurement during the pandemic. In this context, Ábalos published a message on the social network X in which he describes the personal impact of spending these dates deprived of liberty.. “This is the first time in 66 years that I will not share this night with my mother and that in 45 years I will not share this night with my five children,” he shared.
Ábalos reflected on the important role his family plays in his life and the desire he feels not to be able to share this day with his loved ones. “Today is a night that I have always dedicated to them because they fill me with life and that It’s not the same without sharing it with them.“, he stressed.
In his message, the former minister also wanted to extend his thoughts to the rest of the people who spend Christmas behind bars. Ábalos indicated that, as will happen to other detainees, Your night will be marked by memories and the feeling of emptiness. which leaves the absence of celebration and the usual congratulations typical of these dates.
Likewise, he had words of appreciation for prison officers who continue to carry out their work during holidays, guaranteeing the operation of centers throughout Spain. The former number two of the PSOE assured that he remained hopeful because “all his loved ones are still very close despite the walls”.
The anti-corruption prosecution requested up to 24 years in prison for the former minister for alleged crimes such as criminal organization, corruption, influence peddling, embezzlement and use of privileged information while the popular charges called for 30 years. This strong demand for sanctions was one of the reasons which led the Supreme Court to decree his entry into temporary prison due to an “extreme” risk of escape.
