Coach Martin Palermo celebrated Fortaleza’s 1-0 victory over Atletico Mineiro, on Sunday (30), at Arena Castelao, in the 35th round of the Brazilian League.
With this result, Tricolor reached 41 points, remaining in 18th place, only one point behind Internacional (17) and Santos (16), maintaining its chances of survival.
“I haven’t seen them for a long time, because of the many matches we played away from home,” Palermo began, referring to the encounter with the fans. “Today it is a pleasure to return to our homeland, with our people, and get three important points.”
The coach highlighted the team’s development over the course of eight matches without defeat, with four wins and four draws. “I think we were able to run a very strong race, which continues our position and makes us feel more confident and secure in what we believe in as a group. But we still have a couple of steps to follow,” he said.
Palermo strengthened the role of the fans in the final stage and made a new request for massive support. “We have to rest, prepare and be grateful for the support of our people,” he said. “If there are fifty thousand today, I don’t know how many will come in on Wednesday. But if there are sixty, we need the sixty to accompany us here.” “Among everyone, we are giving a great effort that can be seen on the field.”
The Argentine also praised the players’ dedication, highlighting the emotional commitment to the team. He said: “The moment was complicated, but we are reflecting that little by little with the team spirit that appeared in every match. Today was no different.” “I’m calm and proud to be at the front of this group. When the game is over, they have a double heart, what to give and what to fight for. It’s time to live this way.”
Palermo acknowledged the difficulty of the match against a high-level competitor, but highlighted the team’s maturity to maintain the advantage. Fortaleza was subjected to great pressure, but maintained defensive security and scored three important points in its battle against relegation.
He added: “It gives me great pleasure as a coach to receive this response from the players.”
