The Chilean President Gabriel Boric held a live log call José Antonio Kastthe far-right leader who was elected president in this Sunday’s Chilean elections. The conversation was televised as part of a republican tradition in the country and marked the first formal contact between the two.
“I call you following a beautiful Republican tradition that makes us proud, that honors us, which is the call from the sitting president to the president-elect,” said the sitting president.
During the dialogue, Boric congratulated Kast on his victory in the runoff election and stressed the responsibility of leading the country from March 11, the planned date for the leadership change. In this sense, he expressed his willingness to cooperate on whatever is necessary in the coming months, recalling that when he took office he had received a similar gesture from his predecessor, Sebastian Pinera.
Authoritarians don’t like that
The practice of professional and critical journalism is a mainstay of democracy. That is why it bothers those who believe that they are the owners of the truth.
“I congratulate you warmly. You have achieved a clear victory and you know that being President of the Republic is a great responsibility. “I will always be ready to participate in the fate of the country,” said Boric.
Kast, for his part, responded: “Today I’m taking the same approach that this should be a very orderly, respectful transition, and of course, if I swear accordingly on March 11th, after March 11th I would also be very interested to know your opinion and your view of the country.”
In addition, the head of state reported that he had already given instructions to his teams “to be available for coordination and to facilitate a transfer that corresponds to what the Chileans deserve.” In this sense, he assured that Kast will have “all the necessary facilities” to learn about the functioning of the state.
José Antonio Kast will be the next president of Chile: he won the runoff election by more than 15 points and Jeannette Jara conceded defeat
As part of the transition process, Boric invited the founder of the Republican Party to hold a meeting at the La Moneda Palace this Monday morning, in which staff from both rooms will take part, and also proposed an individual meeting to exchange experiences on the exercise of power.
“It’s always good, because at some point you will also know what the loneliness of power means and where you have to make very difficult decisions, and I think it is important, for the good of the country, to pass on to you some of the knowledge that we had here,” he explained.

Kast thanked him for the call, accepted the president’s invitation and explained that he would go with a team of advisors and his wife Pia. In return, he expressed his intention to continue to seek opinions and views from Boric even after he officially takes office.
Towards the end of the conversation, Boric emphasized that Chile is “built on the basis of what everyone has done before,” saying: “Don’t doubt that Chile is bigger than you and me.. “I hope that when it is your turn to take command, the exercise will inspire you too.”
Milei, Rubio, Jara and Boric before Kast’s victory: calls, congratulations and warnings for the next president of Chile
The call came after a historic election in which Kast narrowly won 60% of the votes and it prevailed in all 16 regions of the country, even in districts traditionally identified with the center-left movement. This is one of the biggest differences since the return of democracy, surpassed only by triumph Michelle Bachelet in 2013.
The result of the Chilean runoff election also confirms the political change that has characterized Chile since 2006, without consecutive re-elections of the same party.
