Thousands of people left the Alameda de Santiago de Compostela this afternoon to demonstrate against the installation in Palas de Rei (Lugo) of an Altri pulp mill, pending final authorization from the Xunta, and “to defend the future” of Galicia. This demonstration takes place a year after another massive mobilization spilled over into Praza do Obradoiro.
Called by the Ulloa Viva (PUV) and En Defensa da Ría de Arousa (PDRA) platforms, among others, they are marching towards Praza do Obradoiro to repeat the massive “no” to this industrial project that they already carried out a year ago “with the same conviction and the same strength to defend the future of our daughters and sons”.
The march started at 12:00 p.m. from Alameda, where an hour later (around 1 p.m.) people continued to leave. At the same time, the Obradoiro, the arrival point, began to fill up due to the massive influx of the protest and where a manifesto was read.
There there are people holding umbrellas decorated with chestnut and oak leaves, with the intention of transforming the square into an indigenous forest, just like in 2024 a large blue cloth crossed Santiago pretending to be a river.
The demonstration, which enjoys the support of many organizations – such as the opposition parties BNG and PSdeG – takes place under the slogan “Dende a Ulloa ata o mar, polas que somos e as que virán” (From Ulloa to the sea, for those who we are and those who will come), complemented by “Altri no, fóra xa” (Altri no, out now), which the participants also chant.
“We are here to defend that the resources we have are for our daughters and sons and not so that they end up in the hands of companies that only bring us poverty and steal our resources at all costs,” said Ulloa Viva spokesperson Marta Gontá at the start of the mobilization.
This group is one of the organizers of the protest, alongside the Defense Platform of the Ria de Arousa (PDRA), the Neighborhood Platform against Mina de Touro-O Pino and a dozen other entities.
