Three people from the same family died this Sunday (21) in a fire in an apartment located on the 14th floor of a building in the Água Branca neighborhood, in Piracicaba, in the interior of São Paulo.
According to firefighters, the bodies of the three victims were found in different rooms of the apartment, amid a large amount of smoke. A cat and a dog were also found dead at the scene.
The victims are dentist Lineu Peixoto dos Santos Júnior, 47 years old, Thaís Fernanda de Oliveira Matias, 41 years old, and Maria Eduarda de Oliveira Corder, 18 years old. Lineu and Thaís were married and were the stepfather and mother of Maria Eduarda.
The building had to be emptied for inspection by the firefighters and Civil Protection. Two women suffered smoke inhalation on the 15th floor and received medical treatment. In addition, a police officer was injured in the arm.
According to Lieutenant Magnum Felipe Alves Pereira, of the firefighters, the apartment was completely destroyed and it was not possible to determine the initial source of the fire. Neighboring apartments were also damaged by smoke.
In a statement, the mayor of Piracicaba, Helinho Zanatta (PSD), expressed his solidarity with the families of the victims and the residents of the condominium.
“I followed with deep sadness the fire that occurred today in a building in the Água Branca neighborhood, in Piracicaba,” he said. “The town hall is monitoring the care provided to the two people hospitalized and will continue to be mobilized to provide all the necessary support to the families during this painful period.”
