The Huelva Provincial Court has sentenced a man to three years and nine months in prison and two fines of four million euros each for a crime against public health after he was caught transporting almost 1.2 tons of cannabis resin in a recreational boat ten miles from Matalascañas in May 2022.
According to the judgment consulted by Europa Press, it is considered proven that around 5:00 p.m.… On May 27, 2022, agents of the Maritime Service of the Province of Huelva were on board their maritime patrol vessel to monitor the coast of Huelva and prevent the entry of narcotics when they saw a group of three boats traveling about ten miles from Matalascañas. (Almonte).
Two of the boats were fishing boats from the area known to the agents, who decided to inspect the unknown boat, a recreational boat whose crew fled toward the mouth of the Guadalquivir River instead of stopping for a routine inspection, despite repeated requests to do so “with audible and light signals and over loudspeakers,” which they “ignored.”
So began a chase with the Guardia Civil patrol boat that ended around 6:00 p.m. when the agents, “without losing sight of the boat at any time,” were able to board it about 3.5 miles from Inglesito Beach.
When the police officers entered the boat, they observed from the deck “numerous bundles of burlap visible” and identified and arrested the crew members, the convicted man, who is of legal age and has a expungable criminal record, and two other people who were already in court for these incidents.
Thus, after an examination of the boat – in which intervention was also made – the officers confiscated a total of 60 bales of burlap scattered in the kitchen, hallway and cabin of the same, which revealed a quantity of 1,186,650 grams of cannabis resin, the value of which would have reached more than 3.7 million euros on the illegal market.
For all these reasons, this person is sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for a crime against public health and to pay two fines of four million euros, although the convict is declared insolvent. The judgment was declared final on October 15, 2025.
