Toffoli denies BC embargo, says monetary authority and its director not under investigation in Banco Master affair | Policy

The minister stressed that neither the Central Bank nor the director are under investigation in this matter. The confrontation is maintained for Tuesday 30.

In the decision of this Saturday (27), Toffoli states that he is not aware of the appeal presented by the Central Bank and reiterates that neither the monetary authority nor the director are under investigation and are therefore not “subject to the measures already determined in the present case”. For this reason, the minister also does not specify under what conditions the director will participate in the confrontation, as requested by the BC.

“I would also like to emphasize that the purpose of the investigation is limited to the investigation of the negotiations that involved the transfer of securities between financial institutions — under the control of the monetary authority, in accordance with the legal provision. The action of the national regulatory authority and its participation in the testimonies and confrontations between those investigated is beneficial,” Toffoli said.

The minister said that, given that the facts investigated have a significant impact on the Brazilian financial system, the urgency to proceed with the depositions is justified, as well as the analysis of the documents already collected during the process. He also kept the affair a secret.

“In this way, I determine that the acts will be carried out as already explained in previous orders, under the direction of the competent police authority, with organization by the assistant judge of this office. I maintain the confidentiality of the files given the need for the regular continuation of investigations, under the responsibility of the Federal Police,” added Toffoli.

Sources from the monetary authority say that although the minister denied the merits, he clarified that the director is not the subject of any investigation in the process nor is he a witness. They therefore consider that the decision was positive, taking into account the circumstances.

As revealed by Valuethe Central Bank has decided to declare an embargo to clarify under what conditions Aílton will participate in the confrontation: whether as a witness, accused or offended person. Toffoli imposed secrecy on the entire Master process, including the decision that summoned the director to attend the hearing.
