Released in 1972, “Transa” is widely considered a “masterpiece” and by many “the best album of Caetano Veloso’s career”, as well as one of the greatest albums in the history of Brazilian music. It represents the most accurate example of the extension of the equatorial proposal.
The album was conceived and recorded while Caetano was in exile in London. After being persecuted by the dictatorship, the singer and composer created work described as organic, timeless and spontaneous.
Being a multi-language work, Transa turns English and Portuguese into almost one language across its seven tracks.
Musically, the album includes elements of the reggae music that Cayetano discovered in the English capital.
This reggae sound was appropriately fused with rock, psychedelia, MPB and roots music that came from authentic nostalgia for Bahia.
The process of recording the album was done in a group “like a live show”. This streamlined, organic approach resulted in work that helped shape Caetano Veloso into a prominent figure in the global world of worship.
Cayetano, who remains a figure of great importance as an artist and thinker, demonstrated with “Transa” his ability for cultural synthesis, despite his distance from his homeland.
Nearly 50 years after its release, the album remains “one of the high points of Caetano’s discography.”
At the Estilo Brasil Festival, the artist looks back at the many stages that made him a global icon – and “Transa” is one of the cornerstones of this path. It is an album that reaffirms his genius as a cultural construct.
Estilo Brasil Festival is presented by Banco do Brasil Estilo, sponsored by the Federal Government and BB Visa cards, and held by CapitalsProduced by Oh! Arts.
