MADRID, December 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –
U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has declared much of California’s southern border with Mexico a “militarized zone,” a move that will make it easier for the military to operate in the area and allow the military to detain migrants amid the national emergency declared in January.
The Department of the Interior indicated that, in this way, the “jurisdiction” of a large part of the border between California and Mexico will be transferred to the armed forces so that they can play a “historic role on these lands and safeguard national sovereignty”.
Likewise, he described this area as a “high-traffic area” when it comes to “illegal” migrant crossings, although border guards said there was a decline in attempts to cross this area to historically low levels since the 1960s, according to information gathered by CBS television.
The measure places this border area under the surveillance of military bases established nearby, which favors arrests and possible expulsions of those who enter the North American country illegally.
This military strategy was launched last April in other border areas – notably in New Mexico – and was later extended to the states of Texas and Arizona.
It is estimated that some 7,000 troops will be deployed to the border, where they will also be supported by helicopters and other aircraft, as well as surveillance equipment and drones. Those who are arrested can be charged and even convicted.
