Madrid, December 1 (European Press) –
US President Donald Trump called on Israel on Monday not to “interfere” in Syria and to prioritize dialogue with the country so it can become a “prosperous country,” a week after at least 13 people were killed in an attack by Israeli forces on Syrian territory.
He said in a message posted on his social network, Truth Social, “It is very important that Israel maintains a strong and honest dialogue with Syria and that nothing happens that interferes with Syria’s development into a prosperous country.”
The White House resident confirmed that he is “very satisfied” with the “results” of Syria as a country, through its “hard work and determination.” He added: “We are doing everything we can to ensure that the Syrian government continues to do what it intends to do, which is important for building a real and prosperous country.”
Trump particularly highlighted the importance of lifting international sanctions and those imposed on the United States in particular. “I think Syria, its leaders and its people really appreciate that,” he said.
He also referred to Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa: “He is working hard so that good things can happen and for Syria and Israel to have a long and prosperous relationship together. This is a historic opportunity that adds to the success already achieved in achieving peace in the Middle East!”
Specifically, Syrian President Al-Sharaa received, on Monday, in Damascus, the American special envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, a meeting that was also attended by Foreign Minister Assad Al-Shaibani.
Al-Shaibani previously visited the town of Beit Yin in Damascus Governorate to offer his “condolences” to the families of the thirteen martyrs who were killed in the Israeli incursion last week. The Minister inspected the damage caused by the Israeli occupation forces.
Israel intensified its military incursions into Syrian territory after President Bashar al-Assad fled the country following an attack by the militia led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, whose leader Ahmed al-Sharaa – formerly known as “Abu Muhammad al-Julani” and until then listed as a terrorist by the United States – became the country’s interim president.
Israeli tanks broke through the Alpha Line separating Israeli-occupied territory from the rest of Syria on December 7, just a few hours after the fall of Assad, penetrating the demilitarized zone guarded by the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), and in some cases going beyond it, until it was near the Syrian capital, Damascus.
Israeli forces are now moving freely across the demilitarized zone agreed upon in the 1974 ceasefire agreement between Israel and Syria, which Israel considers invalid after the fall of the former Syrian president.
