The meeting between the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, at Mar-a-Lago, ends. Without news or relevant details, Trump assured that they had “made a lot of progress” and that they were “close” to a final agreement for peace in Ukraine. “Some will say (progress is) 95%, I don’t know what percentage, but we’ve made a lot of progress in ending this war,” Trump added.
After their nearly three-hour interview this Sunday, the president acknowledged differences on the future status of Donbass. “It’s a very difficult question but I think we will resolve it,” he assured, adding that they are “getting closer” on this issue. In this sense, Zelensky added that Ukrainians must respect their land and their people, as well as the territory they control. The country’s attitude towards this area is, he says, “very clear” and its position on the issue is “different” from that of Russia.
Asked how long it would take to end the war, they preferred not to specify it, although Trump assured that it was possible that it could take “a few weeks”. Precisely, the two presidents indicated that in the coming weeks, the negotiating teams will meet again to move the negotiations forward. Zelensky also indicated that he would eventually meet European leaders.
Regarding a possible referendum in Ukraine to vote on a peace plan, Zelensky assured that Ukrainian citizens “have the right to it”, as well as they will need infrastructure to be able to achieve it.
Today’s meeting between the two leaders comes after Zelensky held a telephone conversation on Thursday with White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, with whom he discussed “new ideas” on how to achieve peace in Ukraine, in terms of formats, meetings and a road map for the talks. Moments before the meeting, Trump also had a phone conversation with Vladimir Putin, which he called “very positive and productive.”
