The President of the United States, Donald Trump, defended his economic measures and “price cuts” during a rally in Pennsylvania on Tuesday (12/09/2025) and called for votes for the 2026 midterm elections, despite the decline in his popularity and recent local defeats.
Trump delivered a more than 40-minute speech on a stage set up at a casino in Mount Pocono, a rural town in Monroe County where he won the 2024 presidential election with 49% of the vote, just one point ahead of his Democratic rival Kamala Harris.
“Prices and inflation have fallen to historic lows this year, and we’re proud of that,” Trump assured a crowd of supporters at a meeting that came after criticism from the party’s base for focusing most of his administration on international affairs.
“Good patriots” and other praise
The president described his administration as one of “lower prices, higher wages,” emphasizing that just a day earlier he had announced $12 billion in support for American farmers, largely hit by his tariff policies.
Trump stressed that his administration wanted to “save millions of lives” and described those attending the event as “good patriots” and “incredible workers” and compared himself to them.
The White House accompanied the rally with a statement assuring that they now have “the best economy in the history of the country” and that inflation has been reduced to 2.7% from the 5% that Trump said he inherited from his predecessor Joe Biden.
In his speech, he also stated that in many states a gallon of gasoline has fallen to $1.90, even though the official statement said it was $2.50.
The president’s attempts to highlight perceived economic achievements in rural areas come after his approval rating fell to a historic low of 38%, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released in November, and after significant Republican defeats in local elections, such as the mayoralty of New York and the governorships of Virginia and New Jersey.
The decline in popularity coincided with the longest government shutdown in history and the release of 20,000 emails linked to Jeffrey Epstein’s files, suggesting that Trump knew about the pedophile’s crimes and that he spent time with one of the victims.
