MADRID, December 8 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said on Sunday that he was “a little disappointed” by his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he singled out for not having read the latest peace proposal aimed at ending the war with Russia, a document which would have arrived in kyiv “a few hours” before and which “his people love”.
“We’ve talked with (Russian, Vladimir) President Putin and we’ve talked with Ukrainian leaders, including Zelensky,” Trump said in media statements reported by CNN, in which he said he was “a little disappointed that President Zelensky hasn’t yet read the proposal, which was from a few hours ago.”
The White House tenant assured that, even if Russia would prefer to keep all of Ukraine, he believes that the proposal was “well received” in Moscow. “But I’m not sure that Zelensky agrees with that. His people love it, but they haven’t read it,” he said, a few hours after the Kremlin assured that the “adjustments” made by the United States to its national security strategy “are largely in line with the vision” of Russia.
The US president’s statements come shortly after the Ukrainian president said on his Telegram channel that he expected from the head of the kyiv delegation for the peace talks, Rustem Umerov, and the chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian army, Andri Hnatov, “detailed information on everything that was said to the American envoys”, as well as “on the nuances that the United States is ready to change in the negotiations” with both sides.
“Some issues can only be discussed in person,” he stressed, stressing that Umerov and Hnatov would brief him but were on their way to Europe, where he himself would participate in meetings with European leaders.
He also thanked the “willingness to collaborate 24/7” of Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, and the Republican tycoon’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. “The American envoys know Ukraine’s basic positions and the conversation was constructive, although not easy,” the Ukrainian president said of his conversation the day before with both of them on negotiations on the peace plan championed by Washington.
