The Donald Trump administration has determined that Spain will come like “guest observer” at the leaders’ summit to be held in December 2026 in the US city of Doral, in the state of Florida, according to a State Department official.
Since 2008, Spain has had the status of permanent guest at the G20 summits, where it is also represented by the European Union (EU) delegation.
As part of the first meeting of ‘sherpas’ held on December 15 and 16 under Washington’s current G20 presidency, the State Department noted that Poland “participated as the only country invited to enjoy full rights during the year in which the United States is host country.
So far, the second administration of Donald Trump has maintained a cordial relationship with Madrid, even though the American president himself has indicated on several occasions that Spain had not been “a faithful partner” of NATO for refusing to increase its spending defense up to 5% of GDP, as most Alliance members have agreed to do this year.
Pedro Sánchez’s government insisted that Spain was a partner totally reliable and faithful and that the 2% of GDP that Spain will devote to defense will be sufficient to meet the capacity needs of the NATO.
