The President of the United States, Donald Trumpdeclared himself “disappointed” by his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, because the peace proposal presented by his administration to end the war in Ukraine has not yet been read.
In a conversation with reporters, Trump suggested this Sunday that Zelenki hinders progress peace negotiations. “I’m a little disappointed that President Zelensky hasn’t read the proposal yet. His people love it, but he doesn’t,” Trump said before attending the Kennedy Center awards ceremony.
Trump indicated that Zelensky “not ready” to sign the agreement and highlighted it as an obstacle to peace: “I think Russia agrees, but I’m not sure Zelensky agrees with it. His people love him. But he’s not ready.”
For his part, Zelensky assured that he had a “constructive” conversation this Saturday with Trump’s advisors, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushnerwhich was also attended by Ukrainian delegates who went to Miami for the contacts taking place there on the American peace plan.
“We just had a long and important call,” Zelensky reported in X and thanked the “very focused and constructive” discussion. “We discussed many aspects and examined the key points that could ensure an end to the bloodshed and eliminate the threat of a new large-scale Russian invasion, as well as the risk that Russia will not fulfill its promises, as has happened several times in the past,” he explained.
Zelensky further emphasized that his government is determined to “continue to work with good will” with the American side to truly achieve peace” and noted that kyiv and Washington have agreed on the next steps and formats in which the next contacts will take place.
