In an executive order issued Saturday, Trump said he had directed the department and the FTC to create a task force to investigate any anticompetitive behavior and assess whether control of food-related industries by foreign entities poses a threat to national security.
The order was issued as the US president responds to growing discontent among Americans over the rising cost of living, which fueled Democrats’ victories over the Republican Party in several key elections in November.
Last month, Trump ordered an investigation into the meat processing industry, blaming “predominantly foreign” companies for rising beef prices.
As part of measures to combat inflationary pressures, Trump on November 20 removed additional tariffs of 40% on Brazilian beef, as well as other products, such as tomatoes, coffee, bananas and açaí.
