MADRID, December 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –
United States President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was “closer than ever” to a solution to the Russian conflict in Ukraine, after speaking with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, and European leaders meeting on the same day in the German capital, Berlin, to reach an agreement in this regard.
“I think we are closer than ever and we will see what we can do. An hour ago we had a very good conversation with many European leaders about the war with Russia and Ukraine. We had a long conversation and everything seems to be going well, but we have been saying this for a long time and it is a difficult question,” he said from Washington.
The tenant of the White House insisted on the fact that “things are going rather well” after having had “very long and very good” conversations with Zelensky, the leaders of Germany, Italy, Finland, France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands, as well as with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte.
In the line, he assured that “we have enormous support from European leaders”, saying that they also want to end a conflict which he once again declared that “should never have happened”.
The Republican president stressed that “we have had many conversations with President (Vladimir) Putin of Russia and I believe that now we are closer than ever.” “At the moment, Russia also wants to achieve this,” he added.
Despite this, he warned that the parties involved “will want to end it, and so they won’t,” so he urged them to “come to an agreement, but I think it works very well.”
In Berlin, Ukrainian and American negotiators discussed a 20-point peace plan for the European country attacked by Russia more than three years ago. The US delegation was represented by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, although Russia did not participate in the negotiations.
