US President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the BBC for defamation over the editing of his January 6, 2021 speech into a BBC documentary. Panorama.
Trump accused the BBC of defamation and violating a trade practices law, according to court documents filed in Florida.
He demanded $5 billion (around 27 billion reais) in compensation for each of the two accusations.
Trump’s legal team accused the BBC of defaming him by “intentionally, maliciously and misleadingly manipulating his speech.”
The BBC has not yet commented on the process.
“I think I have to do it,” Trump told reporters about his plans to sue the BBC.
“They cheated. They changed the words that came out of my mouth.”
In his January 6 speech, the Republican told his supporters in Washington: “We will march to the Capitol and applaud our courageous senators and congressmen.”
More than 50 minutes later, in the same speech, he said: “And we will fight. We will fight with all our might.”
Node Panoramaone clip showed him saying: “We’re going to march to the Capitol…and I’ll be there with you. And we’re going to fight. We’re going to fight with all our might.”
The BBC acknowledged the edit gave the “erroneous impression” that he had “made a direct call for violence” before the storming of the US Capitol.
