United States President Donald Trump on Monday denounced Mexico for violating the water treaty between the two countries, via his Truth social network account, and threatened to impose a 5% customs duty on Mexican products if water was not delivered immediately. According to the president, lack of water is damaging crops and livestock in the state of Texas. The published message states that Mexico owes more than 986 million cubic meters of water and must deliver more than 246 million cubic meters of water by December 31.
In April this year, Mexico indicated that the drought recorded in the north of the country made it impossible to respect the international agreement. The agreement between the nations stems from a document agreed in 1944 on the distribution of water from the Colorado River, Bravo River and Conchos, for which the United States is to send 1.850 million and Mexico 2.185 million, but in the last five years less than half of what was agreed has been delivered.
