MADRID, December 9 (EUROPA PRESS) –
United States President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to impose new 5% tariffs on products imported from Mexico if he did not immediately release “200,000 acre-feet of water” (246.7 cubic hectometers), after accusing the neighboring country of violating the Comprehensive Water Treaty.
“I have authorized documentation to impose a five percent tariff on Mexico if it does not release this water immediately. The longer Mexico takes to release the water, the more our farmers will be harmed. Mexico has an obligation to address this issue now,” he said on his Truth Social platform.
The White House tenant justified this announcement by asserting that his country “needs Mexico to release 200,000 acre-feet of water before December 31, and the rest must arrive shortly after”, under the Comprehensive Water Treaty, which dates from 1944 and which, according to him, the Mexican authorities “continue to violate”.
“This violation seriously harms our beautiful Texas crops and livestock (…) Mexico is not responding, and it is very unfair to our American farmers, who deserve this water they so need,” he declared, after assuring that “Mexico still owes the United States more than 800,000 acre-feet of water (986.8 cubic hectometers) for not having respected our treaty over the last five years.”
A few hours earlier, the American president had announced in the presence of the secretaries of the Treasury and Agriculture – respectively Scott Bessent and Brooke Rollins – aid of 12 billion dollars (more than 10.3 billion euros) to support farmers affected by his tariff policy.
“The United States will keep a small portion of the hundreds of billions of dollars we receive in tariffs. We make a lot of money from countries that have taken advantage of us for years (…) So we will use this money to provide $12 billion in economic aid to American farmers,” he said from the White House.
