MADRID, December 6 (EUROPA PRESS) –
This Saturday evening, the Tunisian population began a new protest against the government, fueled by the arrest this week of the opponent Ayachi Hammami, previously sentenced to prison for crimes against the State, in a new example of the autocratic character demonstrated, it is denounced, by the president of the country, Kais Saied.
The march, the third demonstration in as many weeks, was called by the Republican Party of Tunisia and is taking place in the capital of the same name, from Martyr Helmi al Manaei Square to Habib Bourguiba Street, according to the official TAP news agency.
Participants in the march, as on other occasions, also demanded “the decriminalization of the opposition and the liberation of public space” in the middle of a police security corridor to avoid incidents.
Saïed has been accused by the opposition of having imposed a model of dictatorship by assuming the functions of the country’s Parliament and orchestrating his re-election in the 2024 elections, considered a farce by his detractors and in a context of low participation.
Recall that before Hammami’s arrest, the criminal chamber specializing in terrorism cases of the Tunisian Court of Appeal last Friday, November 28, approved a definitive prison sentence against the opponent, who ended up being sentenced to five years in prison for “conspiracy against state security”.
Opposition figures such as Ghazi Chaouachi, Issam Chebbi, Jawahar Ben Mbarek, Ridha Belhaj and Chaima Issa had already been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
