Ubatuba
In this second edition of Folha Verão no Guia you will find tips for enjoying the season in Ubatuba and Camburi, on the north coast. If you want, you can also find a route online along the southern coast of São Paulo.
Of the 35 Ubatuba beaches monitored by Cetesb, only one was not suitable for swimming during the journalist’s visit: part of Itaguá. But the region makes up for it with the main gastronomic areas of the city.

The following list includes, in addition to restaurants, also beaches, tourist routes and hotels with different profiles in the region. But you have to be careful: the beaches can be very far from each other and, often, getting around requires a car or bus.
Enseada Beach
South of central Ubatuba, Enseada beach is one of the most visited in the city and a good option for the family, with its calm sea and good structure of kiosks. The wooded environment completes the view.
Itamambuca
Beach with fewer catering and accommodation options, its nature is very preserved. The rough sea is not the most comfortable place to visit with children, but the surroundings are beautiful and make surfers’ eyes shine.

Felix Beach
A favorite with tourists, it’s a good option for everyone. While the right corner has several kiosks and a calm, crystal clear sea, ideal for those who want to relax or take the little ones, the left edge is more deserted and has more violent waves, attracting surfers.
Lazaro Beach
Another option for those looking for tranquility. The sand is white, the sea is clear and there is no shortage of trees. It manages to combine a good structure with preserved nature.
Picinguaba
This is the most special beach on the list. Small, with calm seas, it draws its charm from the fact that it is home to a traditional fishing village, sewn into nature. It is close to the border with Paraty, in Rio. During busy periods, parking in the area can be expensive.
How to know if sea water is suitable for swimming
-
Cetesb (Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo) coordinates an interactive map of water quality on the beaches. Samples are collected at 177 points along the coast of São Paulo. Then there are laboratory tests to detect bacteria. To check the situation of each beach, which may change, simply go to arcgis.cetesb.sp.gov.br
Restaurants, bars and clubs
Roots
More than 20 years ago, in Itaguá, it was born as a simpler space. Today, it stands out among the city’s restaurants with a more sophisticated menu and atmosphere. There are pizzas and seafood dishes, such as octopus a meu moda (R$298), served with a paprika crust, herb pesto, potato mayonnaise, broccoli and rice broth.

Grandpa Zé
Opposite Raízes, it is a younger restaurant from the same owners. The proposition is fast and casual dining, with faster service and artisanal preparation. The tidy tuna (R$78) comes in cubes, with a touch of citrus from the Japanese ponzu sauce and a spicy flavor from the gochugaru sauce, made with Korean pepper. The so-called meat alfajor (R$33) is a crispy pastry stuffed with angus beef tartare, grana padano and dried egg yolk.

Monokeel
Located right in front of the beach, it serves dinner from 6 p.m., but it is especially popular for its delicious breakfasts and brunches, before or after a swim in the sea. The benedicto (R$60) includes poached eggs with salted fish or bacon, spinach, mushrooms and sautéed tomatoes, with rustic bread and potatoes.

Mediterranean Gastronomy
As its name suggests, it is inspired by Mediterranean cuisine. As a starter, there is the antipasti which bears the name of the house (R$53), made with hummus, peppers
roast, babaganush and dry curds, accompanied by homemade bread. Mediterranean Sea fish (R$91) is served with sesame crust, orange sauce, black rice and chestnut farofa.

Santin Artisanal Gelato
Formerly a retailer of ready-made ice cream, it now manufactures all the flavors, as well as the shells and most of the dessert accompaniments. One of the most requested flavors comes from Brazil, made with coffee, organic cambuci caramel and crunchy chestnuts. Among the treats is the ice cream taco (R$35), with several topping options, of the customer’s choice.

Fritz
The little house is at the end of the Terra de Santa Cruz gallery, a friendly alley with colorful houses, and offers a view of the sea. But make no mistake: here you won’t find beach food, but German dishes and draft beers. The beers are made by the brand itself and prices start at R$15.90 for a 300 ml glass. The weisswurst (R$44.90), a traditional white sausage, is served with potato salad.

Visits
Tamar Institute
The Tamar base in Ubatuba does not take care of turtle reproduction like other units. Instead, the space is focused on feeding young animals, in addition to caring for reptiles injured by fishing and other problems caused by humans. For example, visitors can see different types of turtles and tortoises. A highlight is the albino turtle tank, a type of animal that can only be seen in spaces like this. Tickets for adults start at R$40.

Ubatuba Aquarium
The aquarium has more than 400 animals, distributed in environments that simulate the different biomes from which each of them comes. The penguins, of course, are a hit, and kids who want to attend an educational conference can win a chance to feed the animals. Environmental education also stands out with sections that raise visitors’ awareness of global warming and the damage caused by dumping waste at sea. Tickets start at R$60.
