Born in Uberaba, clinical pathologist Guilherme Ferreira de Oliveira, technical director of Sabin Diagnóstico e Saúde in the city and administrative director of Sabin Group expansion, is the new president of the Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine (SBPC/ML) for the 2026-2027 biennium. In recent years, the doctor has played strategic roles within the entity, including the positions of Director of Accreditation and Quality and Vice President, contributing significantly to the development of the institution and the sector.
He has now reached the highest position in the organization which brings together doctors, pathologists and other specialties, pharmaceutical-biochemists, biomedical scientists and biologists, as well as companies in the sector. The inauguration ceremony, which took place on December 12 at the headquarters of SBPC/ML, in Rio de Janeiro, brought together partners, directors, collaborators and representatives of various institutions and companies in the sector.
SBPC/ML strives to disseminate clinical and laboratory knowledge and promote scientific education and technological development of clinical pathology and laboratory medicine, activities which provide information for approximately 70% of medical decisions. By providing precise and reliable information, clinical pathology and laboratory medicine allow the doctor following patients to make more appropriate decisions.
The role of the sector has even acquired greater importance as the age of the population increases, which increases the demand for medical services in general and diagnostic services in particular. By 2050, around 30% of the Brazilian population will be over 60 years old, which will require longer health monitoring of people. Increasing population age also leads to a greater incidence of diseases that were previously less common. As a result, clinical pathology and laboratory medicine will need more professionals as well as new technologies and knowledge.
Committed to the continued strengthening of the field of laboratory medicine, the new president stressed the importance of continuing the work built in recent years. “We remain aligned with our mission to disseminate clinical and laboratory knowledge, promote scientific education and stimulate technological and regulatory development, so that all of this is reflected in better patient care,” he said.
Originally from Uberaba, Guilherme grew up and built a large part of his professional career in the city of Minas Gerais, where he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Triângulo Mineiro, currently the Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro (UFTM). The pathologist has maintained a constant relationship with the municipality over the years, contributing to the development of the local diagnostic sector even after expanding his operations to other parts of the country.
Another professional with roots in the city is also on the new board. The hematologist and technical director of the Sabin Group, Rafael Jácomo, took over the administrative and financial management of the company. He is the grandson of Doctor Rubens Jácomo, one of the partners of Laboratório Santa Lucilia, founded in 1973 and later integrated into Sabin.
Present in Uberaba since 2012, Grupo Sabin continues to grow and improve. It currently has seven service units in the city and its own operational technical center, which guarantees agility and precision in sample processing.
The company offers a comprehensive set of services, ranging from clinical analysis and pathological anatomy to imaging diagnostics, genomics and immunization.
Sabin units in Uberaba bring together the country’s main quality certifications, such as PALC accreditation, granted by the Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine (SBPC/ML), PADI, from the Brazilian College of Radiology and Image Diagnostics (CBR), and ISO 9001 and 14001 standards.
Additionally, Sabin Group also adopts technological solutions and comprehensive care models. Among them, a mobile service for planning collections and vaccines; the Rita Saúde health service integration platform; and Amparo Saúde, a company focused on primary health care.
