Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Rustem Umerov and Chief of the Ukrainian General Staff Andri Gnatov will begin this Friday (12/19/2025) in the United States a new round of contacts with American mediators as part of negotiations promoted by Washington to try to end the war caused by Russian aggression against Ukrainian territory.
“Today in the United States, together with Lieutenant General Andri Gnatov, we are starting a new round of consultations with the American side,” Umerov, who has attended all meetings in recent weeks along with the Chief of the General Staff, wrote on his Telegram channel. At Washington’s invitation, representatives of Kiev’s most important European partners will also take part in the US meetings.
Umerov said he had already maintained contacts with these European representatives to coordinate positions. According to Axios, the contacts take place in Miami (USA), where one of the American intermediaries, Steve Witkoff, lives. The same media reported that Kremlin envoy Kiril Dmitriev will also meet with representatives of Donald Trump in Miami this weekend.
The Europeans are the novelty
The direct involvement of the Europeans is a novelty compared to previous meetings in the United States, although last Sunday and Monday representatives from the Old Continent were present in Berlin, where there was a meeting between Ukrainian, European and American negotiators with the idea that Washington’s envoys would convey to Russia the proposals of Kiev and its partners to end the war.
The meeting in the United States comes after Russian leader Vladimir Putin said on Friday, December 12, that “the ball is entirely in Ukraine and its partners’ court” as Russia has accepted “compromises” in its own talks with the United States. US President Donald Trump has made no secret of his impatience for the adoption of the agreement between Kiev and Moscow.
