The Armed Forces of Ukraine announced on Tuesday (December 23, 2025) that their forces had been withdrawn from the small town of Siversk in the Donetsk region in the east of the country. The conquest of this city, which had just over 10,000 inhabitants before the war, by the Russian invaders was announced by the Moscow regime on December 11th.
“Fierce fighting continues in the Siversk area. The Russian occupiers have a significant advantage in terms of personnel and technology and are conducting active offensive operations despite significant losses,” the Ukrainian General Staff said. The Russian soldiers “managed to advance thanks to their numerical superiority and the constant pressure exerted by small attack groups in difficult weather conditions,” he added.
“In order to preserve the lives of our soldiers and the combat capability of the units, the Ukrainian defenders withdrew from the city. The Ukrainian Defense Forces exhausted the enemy during the battles for Siversk, every meter of the city was given to the enemy at a high price,” the text continues. Due to the war started by Russia, the city is now in ruins.
Road to Slovyansk
The Ukrainian General Staff added that Siversk remains within the range of Ukrainian artillery in any case and the defense units continue to try to isolate the attackers from their supply routes. Analysts believe the fall of Siversk paves the way for Russian forces to advance toward the strongholds of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, the two major regional cities under Ukrainian control.
According to military analysts, Russian forces approached the city from three fronts starting in September 2025 before breaking through local Ukrainian defenses between November and December. Russia, which occupies about 19 percent of Ukraine’s territory, has accelerated its advances into Ukraine in recent months, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives.
