Even under the pressure of the postponement, the President of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), scheduled the analysis of the bill on dosimetry (PL) in plenary for this Wednesday (17/12). The text must, however, be examined by the Committee on the Constitution and Justice (CCJ) of the House, which is inclined not to approve the question.
It is also possible that senators will request a review, that is, more time to analyze the content of the project, and postpone the agenda until 2026.
The pressure to postpone the agenda is because senators, both government and opposition, do not want to leave their mark on a project that could benefit those who committed other crimes unrelated to January 8.
According to the current text, the progression of sanctions would apply, for example, to environmental crimes, duress in procedures and intentional arson (with intent).
This weekend, demonstrators took to the streets in several Brazilian states against PL Dosimetry. The protests were organized by the Povo Sem Medo and Popular Brazil fronts, in which the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) and the Homeless Workers Movement (MTST) participated.
With the motto “Congress, enemy of the people”, the demonstration is a reaction to the progress of the project which reduces the sentences of those arrested for the acts of January 8. Among the beneficiaries of the text is former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), sentenced to 27 years in prison by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for attempted coup d’état.
Alcolumbre had announced the PL vote during the December 9 plenary session – the project benefits those convicted of the January 8 attacks and former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). He said he had committed to party leaders to pursue the project if it was approved by the House, which happened in the early hours of last Wednesday (10/12).
The senator from Amapá defended the updating of the legislation that deals with crimes against democratic institutions, along the lines of what was proposed by the rapporteur of the project in the House, Paulinho da Força (Solidariedade-SP), who determined that the heavier penalty for the two crimes listed in the Penal Code should be valid, and no longer the sum.
In an interview with Metropolisesin Igor Gadelha’s column, the senator and rapporteur of PL Antifaction, unanimously approved in the Senate, Alessandro Vieira (MDB-SE), warned that the text of the rapporteur in the Chamber must be corrected to benefit only those involved in the putschist acts, without including other crimes.
“There is a problem, certainly, when we modify the rule of progression of the regime, which tries to change only those who are involved in the so-called coup acts, but which ends up going beyond and affecting other crimes,” Vieira said.
