Violence hits Colima again. Heriberto Ramírez, undersecretary for operations of the entity’s Public Security Secretariat (SSP), was shot dead this Tuesday while on his way to work. The official is injured, but stable, as confirmed by the National Coordinating Council for the Construction of Peace and Security in Colima. The government of this Mexican state, one of the most besieged by violence, did not disclose further details about the attack or those responsible, but indicated that the State Attorney’s Office is already at the scene of the events and that its elements are already collecting the evidence and data necessary for the investigation.
In a statement issued a few hours after the incident, the Council condemned the attack and assured that it was already collaborating with the Prosecutor’s Office “to identify and bring to justice those responsible.” According to the state government, the attack against Ramírez occurred north of the city of Colima. Some local media reported that the undersecretary was shot at around 7:30 a.m. while riding in his vehicle on Ignacio Sandoval Avenue.
Colima is one of the states most besieged by violence in the country, with 404 intentional homicides between January and August this year, according to official data. In 2024, the Citizens’ Council for Public Safety and Justice, a Mexican civil society organization which counts violent deaths according to population rate, assured that the state capital is the second most dangerous in the world, behind Port-au-Prince in Haiti. In October, Gabriela Mejía, former PRI mayor of the municipality of Cuauhtémoc, was assassinated. The attack on the undersecretary also takes place after the shooting death of Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan, which generated great discontent throughout the country and put pressure on the federal security strategy of Claudia Sheinbaum’s government.
