According to the Institute for Migration Policy (MPI) There are 47.8 million immigrants in the United States. The vast majority do so legally, as naturalized citizens, permanent residents (green card holders), or temporary visa holders.
More than 10 million immigrants live in Californiawhich accounts for 27% of the population. According to Senator María Elena Durazo’s website, they are essential workers in key sectors such as construction, agriculture, hospitality, child care and home economics, contributing more than $8.5 billion in taxes.
For this reason, Newsom is aware not only of the economic importance of migrants, but also of their political weight. The Democrat is considered a possible presidential candidate for 2028.
Update on new California laws that will benefit thousands of immigrant families
In this context of opposition to the current Republican President Donald Trump (who does not have another re-election term) and protests against the operations of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)In cities like Los Angeles, Newsom signed two laws that complement others and benefit immigrants living in California.
SB 580, known as Act to Strengthen Immigrant Protection Guides (Law to Strengthen Response Guides for the Protection of Immigrants), project by Democratic Senator María Elena Durazo, strengthens state policy to protect immigrants from ICE operations.
In Durazo’s words, “SB 580 ensures our state and local governments have the tools, training and clear guidance they need to protect our communities while upholding our values.”
