The municipal government led by María José Catalá has accelerated the procedures to recover the name of Valencia in Spanish. The social action, education, culture and sports committee, which meets next Tuesday, intends to approve the change of name of the city. … for the bilingual version in Spanish and Valencian (Valencia, Valéncia). Once this administrative procedure is completed, the toponymic file must be approved by the plenary session of the Corporation and will then be sent to the Generalitat Valenciana.
According to municipal sources, the approval of the file by the Culture Commission comes after the technical evaluation of the 1,041 allegations presented, which were rejected “because they were not sufficiently substantiated”. Most of these justifications, they point out, respond to the same models. Specifically, 615 claims used the same argument.
Thus, the Town Hall processed the file for approval of the change of name of the municipality to the bilingual version, in accordance with article 8 of Decree 69/2017, as approved by a report prepared by the Secretary General of the Town Hall.
“From the point of view of the procedure carried out so far by the Town Hall in the file managed by the Linguistic Standardization Service, we can affirm that the legal procedures required by the regulations have been followed,” underlines the report.
The plenary session of the Municipal Council initially approved the change of name of the municipality of Valencia to the bilingual version, and the form “Valéncia” for the name in Valencian. This agreement was then submitted for public information and once the allegations have been resolved, the City Council will now proceed to final approval with another plenary agreement which, subsequently, will be sent to the Consell de la Generalitatwhich is the body responsible for determining the official names of the municipalities of the Valencian Community.
In this regard, the Councilor for Action Culture, Heritage and Cultural Resources, José Luis Moreno, recalled that the Town Hall is basing this change on the technical study of the “renowned linguist and academic from AVL”. Abelard Zaragoza for the change of name of the city; which supports the replacement of the official name of the municipality. València, for the bilingual version, with the spelling of the closed accent in the Valencian form, consistent with the traditional and majority pronunciation of its inhabitants, as well as with the international criteria applicable in this matter.
