After listing vegetables and fruits with properties that can benefit the health of the arteries, vascular surgeon Herik Oliveira was called back, but this time, to mention the supplements that can help these vessels, which have the function of transporting blood rich in oxygen and nutrients to all the cells of the body. It should be noted that these structures tend to become “clogged” due to the formation of fatty plaques, a condition called atherosclerosis.

A specialist at the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SBACV), the doctor explains that “there are supplements that can help the health of the arteries”, including omega 3. Regarding this essential polyunsaturated fat, Herik emphasizes that the formula favors blood vessels by reducing inflammation. With an anti-inflammatory action, the substance improves the functioning of these structures.

“By protecting the internal wall of these vessels, which is the endothelium, omega 3 improves blood circulation. The supplement reduces the process of atherosclerosis, which is the formation of fatty plaques, which tend to cause thickening or even clogging of the arteries,” explains the specialist in angiology. Another benefit of consuming this formula is controlling triglycerides which, when elevated, become a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
According to Herik, the compound also has an antiplatelet action, that is, it reduces the clumping of platelets, thereby reducing the formation of clots or thrombus inside the arteries. The doctor points out that omega 3 can be found in certain foods, such as salmon, sardines and tuna, as well as in seeds, such as chia and flax seeds: “Fish oil supplements are rich in omega 3, which are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

The line of artery-beneficial supplements includes resveratrol. “It’s a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory,” he says. The vascular surgeon continues: “It fights free radicals, oxidative stress, reduces the process of chronic inflammation and prevents damage to the arterial walls.” He claims that the compound helps control cholesterol, by increasing the good cholesterol, HDL, and reducing the bad cholesterol, LDL.
Resveratrol works to reduce blood pressure by increasing the production of nitrous oxide, which is a “potent vasodilator,” as approved by the doctor. Like omega 3, the supplement provides protection to the walls of these vessels, which improves circulation and blood flow and inhibits platelet aggregation. “This formula is present in foods, such as peanuts and, mainly, in fruits, such as grapes, or in the form of supplementation,” he concludes.
