The mayor of Toledo, Carlos Velázquez, asked opposition groups this Tuesday to abstain in the final vote on the 2026 municipal budget, which will be held in plenary session this Thursday. Velázquez assured that the team … the government accepted “large part” amendments presented by the PSOE and the IU, which is considered sufficient reason for the opposition to be coherent and abstain.
During a press conference, Velázquez highlighted that the budget, with 119.6 million euros, represents the largest budget in the history of Toledo City Hall. He also stressed that it is a “very positive” budget which will allow significant investments for the city. “Let’s hope that after the Finance Commission, the opposition groups will abstain,” the mayor said, emphasizing that there is still time for this to happen. However, the accounts will continue with the support of the PP and Vox.
During the Finance Committee held on Monday, eight partial amendments were approved, five of which were unanimous. In total, 19 amendments were presented by the PSOE and 16 by IU-Podemos. From the PSOE, two amendments were accepted, both thanks to transactions proposed by the government team: one to increase the amount of the Municipal Archives and another to increase the amount allocated to pest control and prevention. On the part of IU-Podemos, two amendments were approved, related to the reductions granted to young people in the activities of the Municipal Council of the Rojas Theater and to the increase in scholarships at the Municipal School of Languages.
The PSOE criticized the reduction in allocations for development cooperation, calling the budget the most “unsupportive” in the city’s history. For its part, IU denounced the fact that the budget focuses on the “generation of works” without adequately responding to the needs of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods.
With the support of Vox and the rejection of the PSOE and the IU, the 2026 municipal budget will be submitted to the plenary on Thursday, and
