At least 60 people detained after Venezuela’s 2024 presidential elections were released over Christmas, an NGO of human rights activists and family members of political prisoners reported this Thursday (25/12).
The activists were arrested during the political crisis triggered by the re-election of President Nicolas Maduro in July 2024, for a third term, amid allegations of fraud by the opposition.

Maduro’s proclamation sparked protests that resulted in the arrest of around 2,400 people, whom the president himself called “terrorists.”
More than 2,000 people from this group have already been released, according to official data. Activists began to be released early on Thursday, the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (Clippve) reported.
“We celebrate the release of more than 60 Venezuelans, who should never have been arbitrarily detained. Even if they are not completely free, we will continue to work for their full freedom and that of all political prisoners,” said Clippve member Andreína Baduel.
The conditions of these releases are unclear. AFP requested details of these press releases from the public prosecutor, but has not yet received a response.
