María Corina Machado made her first public appearance after months in hiding. The Venezuelan opposition leader greeted her supporters hours after missing the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo, Norway. And he sang the Venezuelan anthem with the crowd.
Machado secretly traveled to Norway to attend the awards ceremony. According to the “Wall Street Journal”, Nicolás Maduro’s opponent managed to disguise herself and pass ten military checks. She fled Venezuela on a wooden boat to Curaçao in the Caribbean, where she took a flight to Norway, but did not arrive in time.
The Nobel Peace Prize was received by his daughter, Ana Corina Sosa. Machado had been banned from leaving Venezuela since 2014 by the Maduro government. And his awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize sparked controversy. While some Venezuelans celebrate their strong opposition to the regime, others criticize their support for Donald Trump’s military campaign against Maduro. At a press conference in Oslo, Machado declared that Venezuela would be free.
“To all citizens of the world, I assure you that I have great hope that Venezuela will be free and that we will transform the country into a beacon of hope, an opportunity for democracy. And we will welcome not only the Venezuelans who were forced to flee, but also citizens from around the world who will find refuge, as Venezuela was decades ago.”
