The Russian Defense Ministry released on Wednesday (December 31, 2025) a video of a drone shot down during the alleged Ukrainian attack on a residence of President Vladimir Putin this week, which Kiev denies and calls a “lie.” Russian authorities assure that it was a “terrorist” and “personal” attack on the president and warned against toughening their position in negotiations to end the war.
Ukrainian leaders condemned the accusation as a “fabricated” accusation to hinder peace efforts and demanded Moscow provide evidence of the attack. In the video posted by Moscow, a damaged drone can be seen lying on the snow in a forested area. The ministry assures that the attack was “targeted, carefully planned and carried out in phases”.
A “carefully planned” attack
“Between December 28 and 29, 2025, the Kiev regime attempted a terrorist attack using long-range unmanned aircraft against the residence of the President of the Russian Federation in the Novgorod region,” reported General Alexander Romanenkov, in charge of the Russian army’s anti-aircraft defense. It is the first time Moscow has denounced an attack that could target the Russian leader, who has protected its security since the conflict began.
The attack reportedly began at 7:00 p.m. local time on December 28 with a “massive” launch of low-altitude drones departing from Ukraine’s Sumi and Chernigov regions. Russian authorities did not say whether the president was there at the time, but noted that the house was not damaged. The ministry also released the video of an alleged witness to the attack, a resident of a village near this residence.
“The attack formation, the number of assets deployed and their coordinated actions from the south, southwest and west, aimed directly at the residence of the Russian president in the Novgorod region, clearly confirm that the Kiev regime’s terrorist attack was selective and carefully planned,” Romanenkov said.
