A violent fight between a group of boys from La Plata sparked chaos in the heart of the city and left passers-by in Plaza San Martín completely surprised. The violent confrontation, which took place right in front of families and children enjoying the afternoon, was captured by a witness who couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
The video shows how five young people beat each other in the middle of the green of the square without thinking about the consequences. At one point, one of them smashed a bottle on the ground, hurling the threat into the air like a sword of Damocles. The tension was so high that even the calmest passersby approached them, trying to understand how something so violent could happen in one of the city’s most iconic places.
And of course we couldn’t miss “Tito”, the classic electric security vehicle that drives around the square and on this occasion witnessed how the situation got out of control. Although the driver activated the siren in a desperate attempt to calm the situation, his presence was useless in the face of the young people’s anger. “Tito” could only be another spectator in this out-of-control fight.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. when the square was full of life. While the children were playing and the families were relaxing on the benches, a group of young people decided to bring chaos to the center of La Plata. Although several witnesses called 911, police did not arrive until about ten minutes later, when there was no sign of the fight.
The most worrying thing about this episode, besides the excessive violence, is the feeling of insecurity it creates in a place that has historically been considered one of the city’s green lungs.
