President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said in a speech this Friday (19) that he would give “a beating” to next year’s elections. During an event with collectors in São Paulo, the PT member declared that “the far right will no longer govern the country.”
— We are going to beat up anyone who thinks that the extreme right is going to rule this country again. Let them come! Let them come! Because we will challenge it, neither with words nor with insults. I want to compare what they did in this country with what we did. I want to compare who has done the most in the field of health, who has done the most in education, who has done the most in transport, who has done the most in social inclusion policy. I want to know — said the president.
At the same event, Lula also declared that he would veto the PL Dosimetry, approved in Congress on Wednesday (17).
— For the first time in the history of this country, we have a president arrested for attempted coup d’état. For the first time in this country, four four-star generals are arrested for attempted coup d’état. For trying to develop a plan to kill Lula, to kill Alckmin and to kill Alexandre de Moraes. And now they want amnesty. With all due respect, with all due respect to the deputies and senators who voted for the reduction of the sentence, I want to tell you that I will veto this law. And if they want it, let them remove it. But we must teach these people to respect, the president said.
Alongside First Lady Janja and ministers like Fernando Haddad (Finance), Esther Dweck (Management and Innovation), Guilherme Boulos (General Secretariat of the Presidency) and Paulo Teixeira (Agrarian Development), among others, Lula, who was almost three hours late to take the stage, told the collectors that age is not an obstacle to governing.
— I’m 80 years old, but if they only knew how excited I am to rule this country. Because I tell everyone, you know why I won’t grow old? Because I have a cause that is just getting older and has an empty brain. Get ready, I want to live to be 120.
The statements took place during the closing ceremony of the 12th edition of Expocatadores, at the Anhembi Exhibition Pavilion, in the North Zone of São Paulo. The event brought together around 3,000 collectors and 600 cooperatives, as well as international collector organizations. On this occasion, decrees, protocols of intent and cooperation agreements were signed between the government and the entities that collect recyclable materials, in addition to the release of credits through Caixa Econômica Federal and BNDES.
Since 2003, the year he assumed his first presidential term, Lula has participated in collectors’ Christmases, with a few absences. In 2024, the president did not attend the event due to medical recommendations: he was hospitalized in São Paulo for nine days to treat an intracranial hematoma. Three other previous absences occurred in 2011 (treatment for laryngeal cancer), 2018 (I was arrested at the Federal Police in Curitiba) and 2020 (pandemic).
