After a week of silence, Juan Carlos Ferrero speaks for the first time about the reasons for his professional break with Carlos Alcaraz. In an interview with Brand, The coach assured that “there have been certain issues” on which “the two parties do not agree”.
“Everything seemed to be going well to continue. It’s true that when a year ends, you have to look at certain things in terms of the contract. And as in any new contract, in view of what the following year will be, There were some things we didn’t agree on.“, said the technician.
Ferrero clearly stated that “as in all contracts one pulls for one place and the others for the other. From Carlos’ environment, they think of what’s best for him and from mine, they think of what’s best for me.”
The former Alcaraz coach assured that the main reason was the disagreement between the two parties: “There have been certain issues on which the two parties do not agree. It may be that they could have been saved if we had sat down and talkedbut ultimately we didn’t sit down and decided not to continue. “That’s really what happened.”
“I think the year was very good in terms of results and the relationship between the two was spectacular throughout the year. We never had any fights. The entry of Samuel gave a fresh air to the team so that the relationship could last in the future. It’s been a very good year and, when we finished in Turin, it’s true that we all had the idea that we were going to continue. Then what happened happened and we separated, but in principle the idea was to continue and that’s why I told him that in the statement,” he said.
Of their seven years together, Ferrero recognizes that one of the best moments was Carlos Alcaraz’s period between the ages of 15 and 18.
“We share many moments together in training, in tournaments, in hotels… We always went everywhere together. This growth, these experiences, these results, for the most part good, even if there are always unexpected ones, it was a very beautiful step. Several times, I told him that I missed this era of challengers, of small tournaments in which you really saw this enthusiasm to grow and want to climb many positions,” he emphasizes.
“Then when we are at the top the objectives are different and we no longer have so many positions to climb or so many things to teach. We rather move towards a teaching path little by little. At the beginning, the teaching is always faster and more generous. As we reach these milestones, all the important tournaments that come up are unforgettable moments. All the Grand Slams that we have won, especially the last Roland-Garros, which was the most complicated. I keep everything positive,” he emphasizes.
“When I arrived, he was a player who had impressive technical, physical and mental abilities, and with the whole team we were able to help him progress. And he gave us absolutely everything to learn, work and move forward. I was lucky to find the person capable of doing all that at Carlos’ level. I think we’re both grateful to have found each other,” he says.
Ferrero considers the changes to be “complicated”, But even so, he was confident that it would not negatively affect the performance of the Murcian tennis player.
“Samuel López is a person who knows you a lot. For spending a lot of time with me when we were training longer here at the academy and last year He has gained a lot of experience to be able to steer the boat alone at coach level“, says Ferrero, who does not believe that wear and tear is the consequence of the separation.
“There’s wear and tear when you spend so much time, there’s always a little bit of it. I think traveling so much, spending so much time away from home, that kind of thing, wears you out. What happens is we’ve had a lot of support for each other within the team and One of the reasons we brought Samuel in was so that relationship doesn’t erode.. All these weeks have been good for us. Put new words, ways of saying things with the same objective but in a different way. And one of the methods to avoid wear and tear was this,” he reveals.
One of Ferrero’s achievements was making Carlos Alcaraz a professional tennis player: “It was a goals, but the clearest is to grow as a person and as a professional. That he would fit in well in this complicated world. Once he became so famous and such a favorite in all the tournaments, then helping him with all that pressure. One of the main goals is for Carlos to be comfortable in tournaments, with a lot of motivation, because when you achieve a lot of things, the motivation must be intact and that is one of the things in which we have tried to be at the top.”
“I put my whole heart into this project. I think I invested a lot of time, a lot of desire, a lot of work, and I think it was important to find the team and the people who will let me do it. When you come in, at 15, you see the player, you see how good he is, you see the potential, but you can’t imagine everything that comes. We are working on it, with great enthusiasm, but it is always difficult to see dreams come true. I find myself with a feeling of tranquilityafter doing their homework and I hope they think of a good job,” he emphasizes.
“I think maybe we both need some time to process this breakup. It’s not that simple. Right now I’m hurt. These relationships are complicated to leave overnight.. And you have to spend time grieving. And most importantly, I guess it will also hurt when I see him playing in tournaments. A lot of real-life experiences come into play. “I think it’s going to take time,” he said.
“I have adapted my style as much as possible to Carlos. At no time do I consider other options because I need two or three months to be calm and for the pain to pass. From there, if other possibilities arise, we will weigh them. In the end, it’s almost eight years of non-stop and a lot of time away from home. Being home now is appreciated,” he said.
As for whether he would receive an offer from Jannik Sinner in the future, he was blunt. “That would be something I would have to think about. They are extraordinary players, but like I said before, now is not the time to think about something like that and say yes or no. It is now time to take the difficult step because every day I still think of Carlos and this is not the time to think of others.”
“I want to be calm and we have hearts. It’s impossible for me to fuck anyone else right now because My thoughts are still there and it would be very complicated. At the moment it would be something impossible,” says Ferrero, who is not closing the door to a return to Alcaraz in the future.
“With the relationship we’ve had, closing the door certainly wouldn’t make sense with him or the team. I want to finish well with them. Disagreeing on certain points doesn’t mean that we don’t remain friends or that we don’t have very good relationships.. I wish Carlos the best and I think he has a chance to become the best tennis player in history. This is something I have said many times. And even if I’m not there, he has people around him who can prepare him very well,” he concludes.
