(This article contains SPOILERS for “AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH”)
3 hours and 17 minutes is the time you will spend sitting at the cinema if this Christmas you decide to go see the new film Avatar he December 19 Well, if anything is clear, it’s this James Cameron He still has a lot to tell about these blue beings that, 16 years ago, we met for the first time with the first opus of the saga.
It’s only been three years The meaning of water (2022) and, although they are much lower than the 13 we had to wait between the first and second parts of the franchise, we still had to do a thorough refresher on who was who and what happened in this second installment to be ready for the third, fire and ashes, in which, once again, we meet new characters, including the leader of the new fire clan Na’vi, played by Oona Chaplin.
A new film that, if it gets lucky and manages to get a fourth, promises to force us to do another in-depth review when that fourth installment comes out, because just trying to summarize what happened and how this first arc of Cameron’s blockbuster saga ended gives us a headache. But hey, let’s try.
Fire Chief Varang and Colonel Quaritch
The introduction of the fire clan was the big gamble of this third opus, the pretext to show us a much darker Pandora in which the new Na’vi clan of Ashes presented us with a new way of accessing the power of this blue world, one born from disconnection with one’s divinity and not out of veneration for him.
Determined to obtain and understand these human weapons capable of “creating thunder”, The leader of these new Na’vi decides to join forces with Colonel Quaritcha union not only as allies, but also as lovers, in which we see how the Colonel becomes more and more accustomed to Na’vi customs while these beings of fire adopt the warrior mentality that, until now, we associated with humans.
So, even if the future of Pandora remains open to further explore this war between the Na’vi for a Pandora for or against Eywa, we see an evolution in Colonel Quaritchwho not only seems to begin to bond with Jake through fatherhood, but also demonstrates his more human side (in a good way) by trying to save his son from death.
A plot that promises more development in a fourth part in which we know that, no matter how much you have seen him throw himself into the void for fear of confronting his feelings, he will reappear as alive as always. As for Varang, we are almost sure to see her again in the next episodes after seeing her flee in terror when she sees Kiri’s power (more on that later).
Crying over a death and hatred of humans
The second major theme of this third part of Avatar East the duel. After the death of Neteyam, the eldest son of the Sullys, in The meaning of waterthe family that was until now a fortress has collapsed. Neytiri struggles with negative feelings towards Spiderthe human who reminds him of all the evil that our species has brought to Pandora and, for his part, we see a much tougher Jake with his son Lo’ak.
After arguments between the couple, faced with opposing ideologies due to their different natures, Jake comes to the conclusion that – after Kiri managed to save his friend by allowing him to breathe without his oxygen mask thanks to Eywa – the only solution to save Pandora from human colonization is kill Spider so they can’t replicate whatever makes him breathe in his worldexactly as Neytiri had told him.
However, just as he is about to do so, the two adults realize their mistake and, although Spider has accepted his fate, they decide to find another solution. The question after the acceptance of Neytiri, who finally manages to consider Spider as one of his own, is how the relationship between the two parents would evolve (if there is a place to evolve towards) in a possible sequel.
Jake becomes Toruk Makto again
On the other hand, Jake defends that, to fight against his own species, they need their human weapons and not Eywa’s miracles, which triggers clashes with the rest of the Na’vi, who believe that what they need is for him to reconstitute Toruk. In the end, Jake decides that they are right, that the guns have only brought suffering, and he bets on unite all the clans and fight against the humans, becoming Toruk Makto again.
After telling his son Lo’ak how proud he is of him for bringing everyone to fight in this war, and adding to the fact that he took it upon himself to tell this third part, it seems that the one who was human, little by little, hands over to Lo’akwho aims to become the protagonist of the next opus as the future leader of his clan. Additionally, what is considered to be the next love story between him and Tsireya is still open.
The Tulkun go to war thanks to Lo’ak
The meaning of water He left us a Lo’ak who formed a bond with Payakan, the Tulkun banished by his species after being accused of inciting his people to defend themselves. fire and ashes introduces us to a new custom of this kind: baby baptismwho heads to the Tree of Souls to be presented to Eywa.
When the Na’vi discover that the humans intend to attack in this vulnerable moment, Jake attempts to convince the Tulkun to defend themselves, however, they remain true to their motto that the more blood they produce, the more there will be. It is only when Lo’ak goes to the council with Payakan, who discovers that his pack has been wiped out and that only one Tulkun remains blinded by humans, that It leads them to agree to defend and attack for the first time in their history.
It is at this point that Jake tells him how proud he is of him, because even Toruk Makto did not achieve what he accomplished in defending his partner Tulkun, one more example that seems to direct the plot towards a new protagonist destined to become the leader that his father once was.
Spider’s acceptance and Kiri’s connection with Eywa
And all that remains is to analyze the role of Kiri, the adopted daughter of the Sullys and natural daughter of Dr. Grace. After speculation about the identity of her father, this third part reveals that Kiri was conceived during the time the Na’vi were trying to save her mother. SO, Kiri is Eywa’s direct daughter, this is why he seems to have this particular link with the divinity which allowed him not only to save his friend Spider, but also to communicate with animals and make them attack humans in the battle fought in this third part.
However, this is not something I do alone. After Ronal begs her that if she is capable of doing something for her people, she should do it, Kiri tries to connect to the Tree of Souls again knowing that she might die doing so and that Eywa has not listened to her on previous occasions. But this time, Spider and Tuk also connect, helping him get to Eywa to ask for his help.
After their victory, the film ends with Spider connecting to the tree and accepted as one by the Na’vi and its ancestorsthus ending the first arc of the saga of Avatar, which still doesn’t reveal Kiri’s true power. We will have to wait for possible future sequels to find out.
