After December 25, a common question arises in many homes: when is the right time to take down the Christmas tree. One of the most significant symbols of the end-of-year celebrations, the tree is generally erected on December 8, a date which coincides with the day of the Immaculate Conception, and remains decorated until another religious reference.
In Brazil — as well as in other countries with a Christian tradition — there is a cultural consensus on the end of Christmas decorations: Three Kings Day, celebrated on January 6. This date marks the visit of the wise men to the child Jesus and symbolizes the official end of the Christmas cycle.
Despite this, there is no absolute rule. Decorations can be removed at any time after Christmas, but choosing Three Kings Day is a symbolic step in “closing” the festive period.
Another popular tradition is to disassemble the tree 30 days after assembly, which leads to January 8, exactly one month after the Immaculate Conception.
When does the Twelfth Day fall in 2026
Three Kings Day is celebrated every year on January 6. In 2026, the date will fall on a Tuesday, during the first full week of the year.
The tradition is particularly strong among children: the evening before, they generally leave shoes in a place in the house so that Melchior, Gaspar and Baltazar can leave gifts. It is also common to place water and symbolic food for the camels used during the journey.
Despite its religious and cultural importance, Three Kings Day is not a national holiday, according to the official calendar provided for by Brazilian legislation. Yet, as it happens during the summer school holidays, the date is usually celebrated without affecting the routine of families.
